Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle hands on approach to releasing restrictions in the tissues surrounding the central nervous system. It is calming and balancing. People find it deeply relaxing. It is helpful in all problems involving the head, spine and pelvis, and good for relieving stress and digestive problems.

It was developed as an extension of A.T. Stills’ Osteopathic philosophy by William Sutherland, DO in the early 1900’s. Another American Osteopath, John Upledger DO, further developed and promoted craniosacral therapy around 1983.

Craniosacral therapy works with extremely subtle movements in the body called the craniosacral rhythm. The therapist uses variations in the rhythm to assess and treat dysfunctional areas.

Dr. Sutherland discovered the continuity of this rhythmic movement throughout all the tissues of the body. The treatment works to restore the movement wherever it is restricted.
